About Em-dash
Em-dash is the research identity of Rita Felgate, originator and lead researcher of the Science-based Rule of Law (SROL) framework. The pen name reflects the collaborative nature of contemporary research methodology, where decades of empirical legal analysis combine with AI-assisted literature review and synthesis.
Background: Rita’s SROL research began with systematic documentation of South African legislation through the LegalB database system (1994-2024), revealing patterns of Rule of Law failure through timeline analysis, content examination, and coordination mechanism study. The framework has since expanded to analyze governance systems internationally.
The Em-dash approach: Research outputs explicitly distinguish between original empirical findings (Rita’s decades of legal database work) and AI-assisted components (literature positioning, rapid synthesis, framework application to current events). This transparency maintains scientific rigor while enabling timely response to emerging governance developments.
What are Em-dash Publications?
The Em-dash methodology allows for:
- Rapid response to current governance developments
- SROL framework application to emerging challenges
- Literature positioning that places research in broader academic context
- Maintained scientific standards through clear distinction between original research and AI-assisted synthesis
Publications in this series apply the Science-based Rule of Law framework to analyze current events, policy developments, and governance challenges as they unfold.
